SBS was initially formed in 1937 as the Sao Paulo Society of Sociology. In 1950, it became the Brazilian Society of Sociology.

Establishment of Brazilian Society of Sociology (SBS)/ Sociedade Brasileira de Sociologia

The SBS (Brazilian Society of Sociology)/ Sociedade Brasileira de Sociologia was formed in 1937 as the Sao Paulo Society of Sociology. In 1950, the Sao Paulo Society of Sociology became the Brazilian Society of Sociology (SBS). SBS is a scientific society with no links to political parties or religious organizations at the governing level.

SBS is a non-profit organization that aims to bring together Brazilian professionals and scholars working in sociology and allied social sciences in an institutional setting.

Its operations were halted from 1964 to 1985 under the military dictatorship, which was reformed in 1986.

Mission of SBS

The mission of the Brazilian Society of Sociology is to

  • Encourage the organization of scientific events.
  • Facilitating the flow of ideas between professionals and researchers.
  • Seeking to improve the quality and institutionalization of sociology in Brazil.
  • Scientific knowledge transmission and diffusion through publications and social media
  • Assisting the community of associates with representation and institutional improvement.

Membership in the Brazilian Society of Sociology

The membership of SBS is paid subscription, and the amount varies according to student and researcher. The membership is open to all members of the social science community.

Publications and Journals

Sociologies in Dialogue was a biannual English-language journal started in 2015 by the Brazilian Society of Sociology (SBS) to publish previously unpublished papers in the area of sociology.

The Brazilian Society of Sociology’s scholarly publication, Revista Brasileira de Sociologia, or RBS magazine, was founded in 2013 and has been published every four months since 2017. The journal is free and can be downloaded directly from the website.

SBS had two national conventions between 1950 and 1962. Since 1987, the Brazilian Congress of Sociology has been held biennially, with foreign visitors and growing recognition in the international society.
