Truancy Definition

Truancy is defined as the habitual, unexcused absence from school, typically occurring during compulsory education. Sociologically, truancy is significant because it functions as a strong predictor of subsequent negative behaviours, including drug use and other delinquent activities. Furthermore, a history of truancy is frequently reported by individuals within the juvenile justice system.

Impact on Education Quality

Beyond its direct effect on students, chronic unexcused absence presents systemic issues within educational institutions. High rates of absenteeism among educators—such as when more than a quarter of teachers are chronically absent (defined as more than ten days per year) for reasons unrelated to school activities—reflect broader concerns about the overall quality of education provided to students.
