Encounter Definition

An encounter refers to any meeting or interaction between two or more people in a face-to-face setting, forming a fundamental component of everyday life. These interactions range from brief contacts with strangers to more familiar exchanges with known individuals. Everyday existence is characterised by a continuous series of these encounters, some involving close acquaintances while many others are fleeting.

Sociological Analysis

Sociologist Erving Goffman analysed the social rules that govern these interactions, focusing particularly on how participants manage their presence and attention. For Goffman, encounters involve social actors positioning their bodies and directing their attention—both appropriate and inappropriate gazes—which collectively create and maintain the diverse types of encounters observable in social life. He described these situations as instances of copresence.
