Births Outside Marriage Definition
Births outside marriage refers to the statistical count of births occurring to women who are not legally married at the time of the event. This phenomenon has seen a substantial increase since 1960, rising to more than one in four births by 1990. Despite this trend, data also indicate that many unmarried parents reside together, suggesting that a significant proportion of these births occur within stable relationships rather than isolated circumstances.
Trends and Causes
The observed rise in births outside marriage is largely attributable to the increasing prevalence of cohabitation as a family structure. Furthermore, demographic factors play a role; there is an observed correlation between a mother’s age and her likelihood of remaining unmarried.
