The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences was originally developed over two decades ago for the analysis of social science data using mainframe computers. While it was initially restricted to such systems (like SPSS-X), subsequent developments have allowed the software to adapt to more accessible platforms, including IBM PC compatible microcomputers via versions such as SPSS-PC+. This evolution has gradually increased its popularity among researchers.
Functionality and Structure
SPSS is structured as a series of modules; the Base module provides the minimum necessary functionality, while additional modules, such as Statistics and Advanced Statistics, are required for more complex analytical procedures. The package offers extensive facilities for data management, including labelling, modification, and transformation. It is particularly adept at handling survey data due to its robust capabilities in tabulation and reporting.
Data Processing Workflow
To perform an analysis using SPSS, a researcher must first create a data file where information for each case or respondent is entered in a row, with each column representing a specific variable. This data file can typically be created in a spreadsheet and imported into the software. Analyses are selected via screen displays, and relevant commands can be input either through a syntax file or a command file, which can be prepared using a word processor. Upon execution, SPSS generates an output file containing the results of the performed calculations, which can then be edited for final presentation.

SPSS provides enormous data processing power globally, making it a cornerstone tool for quantitative sociological research.
