Quantitative Research Definition
Quantitative research is a methodology focused on collecting data in numerical form to enable statistical analysis. This involves gathering numerical information such as durations, scores, counts of incidents, ratings, or scales, which are then used to measure variables and detect relationships between them. Data for quantitative research can be gathered from controlled environments, naturalistic settings, laboratories, or samples drawn from the general population. The defining characteristic is that the resulting numbers stem directly from the data collection process, whether the initial data was numerical or non-numerical values were subsequently converted during the analysis phase.
Epistemological Foundations
Quantitative research is typically associated with the realist epistemology, which posits that an objective reality exists and is directly knowable, meaning real things can be measured and assigned meaningful numerical values. This approach requires researchers to accept certain criteria aligned with the positivist standpoint for these numerical values to be considered valid. The ability to obtain numerical materials facilitates the measurement of variables, allowing for the application of statistical tests. These methods include descriptive statistics for summarising findings and correlation coefficients to illustrate relationships, as well as inferential statistics such as analysis of variance (ANOVA), analysis of covariance, and multivariate analysis of variance, which are crucial for establishing effects or investigating interactions between variables within experimental designs.
Application and Tracking Change
A significant advantage of quantitative methods is their capacity to track changes over time more effectively, as measures of the same properties can be taken at multiple points during an intervention. This allows researchers to establish the efficacy of interventions by comparing outcomes across different time points—for example, tracking measures related to social behaviour or public services throughout a community project. Without numerical data, establishing actual causal effects is considerably more difficult.
Critical Perspectives and Tension
While quantitative research produces ‘facts’ about the world and behaviour that are accepted as valid measures, it faces criticism from other methodological traditions. Qualitative researchers often argue that this approach neglects social meanings and the socially constructed nature of reality. Furthermore, critical researchers contend that data collection methods can place subjects under unequal power relations, denying them status as agents. This creates a considerable tension between quantitative and qualitative methodologies. Some strong qualitative methodologists suggest that the positivist view excludes participants as agents and ignores constructs existing only within social interaction. Pragmatists argue that quantitative methods are best deployed when sufficient knowledge exists to formulate testable hypotheses. Ultimately, researchers must clearly define their questions before selecting an appropriate methodology, recognising that experimentation requires quantitative methods for robust evaluation.
