Polygamy Definition

Polygamy refers to a form of marriage that permits an individual to have more than one legal spouse concurrently. While the term broadly describes plural marriage involving multiple partners of the opposite sex, it is often used in specific contexts to denote arrangements where one man has two or more wives. The more precise sociological terms used to specify these arrangements are polyandry (where one woman has multiple husbands) and polygyny (where one man has multiple wives).

Terminology

Strictly speaking, the term polygamy does not inherently specify the gender distribution of the spouses involved. However, in common usage, it is frequently employed to refer to the situation where a single man is married to two or more women. Consequently, while ‘polygamy’ is sometimes used generally, the specific arrangement of a man having multiple wives is accurately termed polygyny.

Social Context

The prevalence of polygamous arrangements is often viewed through the lens of patriarchal structures. The fact that these arrangements are considerably more common than polyandry suggests that polygamy reflects and reinforces the power dynamics inherent in patriarchal societies.
