New Information and Communication Technologies (NICT) refer to the rapid development of digital technologies that have fundamentally transformed how media content is produced, distributed, and consumed, as well as how audiences engage with that content. Over the last few decades, the increasing use of these digital platforms has driven substantial changes across various sectors, making production processes more efficient, reducing costs, and offering new avenues for audience participation. While these technological shifts have created opportunities for innovation—such as integrating different media forms seamlessly—it is important to adopt a cautious perspective when assessing claims regarding revolutionary societal change.

Impact on Media Production

Digital platforms have streamlined the production of all media forms, including print, sound, film, and photography, by allowing visual and auditory material to be integrated efficiently with text. This integration facilitates cross-media ownership and makes production processes significantly easier and faster. Historically, media production relied on highly specialised, sequential stages involving numerous staff; however, digital systems have reduced this fragmentation. For instance, text entry is now handled directly by the author, reducing the need for a large number of specialised personnel.

Transformation of Media Markets

The advent of digital platforms has also altered the structure of media distribution and consumption. Digital television has enabled an enormous increase in channel availability, leading to more specialised broadcasting. Consequently, the traditional mass market model is being supplanted by differentiated markets characterised by narrowcasting, which allows for greater segmentation of audiences. Furthermore, these technologies permit direct audience interaction with media, enabling participation in processes such as downloading music or editing content.

Social and Behavioural Implications

Beyond the practical changes in production and distribution, NICT has profound implications for social relations. There is ongoing discussion regarding whether digital technologies, such as mobile phones and portable computers, will lead to a networked or distributed society and subsequently influence social behaviour. However, while these potential consequences are widely discussed, definitive proof regarding the extent of their impact on societal norms remains largely unproven.
