Inferential and Descriptive Statistics Definition

Descriptive statistics involve methods used to organise and summarise numerical data so that the social phenomena they represent can be clearly understood. This encompasses measures of central tendency, such as the mean and mode, and measures of dispersion, including the range and standard deviation. Furthermore, descriptive statistics include measures of the association between variables, such as correlation and regression. In contrast, inferential statistics are statistical methods designed to allow researchers to make generalised conclusions about a larger population based on data drawn from a sample, while simultaneously providing an assessment of the reliability of those generalisations.

Descriptive Statistics

Descriptive statistics focus on summarising and describing the characteristics of a dataset. They provide a snapshot of the data by calculating measures that describe where the data lies, how spread out it is, and the relationships between variables within the observed sample.

Inferential Statistics

Inferential statistics are concerned with drawing conclusions or making predictions about an entire population based on a smaller sample. These methods involve statistical inference, allowing researchers to estimate parameters and test hypotheses regarding larger groups, including assessing the probability that the observed results are representative of the wider population.
