The Ideal Speech Situation (ISS) is a concept introduced by the critical theorist Jürgen Habermas to describe the ideal conditions of human interaction that he believes are presupposed by academic analysis and the search for truth. It posits an environment of unfettered communication where speakers implicitly aim to be truthful, sincere, and comprehensible in their claims. For Habermas, this situation is crucial because it allows sociological inquiry to achieve factual objectivity while simultaneously supporting particular ethical values, thereby attempting to resolve the traditional distinction between fact and value.
