Epiphenomena Definition

Epiphenomena, derived from the prefix ‘epi’ meaning ‘on top of’ or ‘in addition to’, is a concept used to distinguish between surface manifestations and deeper underlying realities. In sociological and Marxist thought, this term is contrasted with ‘phenomena’, which refers to the surface appearance of something versus its fundamental reality. To describe an event, such as religious conflict in Northern Ireland, as epiphenomenal does not imply that it is unreal; rather, it suggests that the observable manifestation disguises a deeper determining cause. For instance, Marxists would argue that the epiphenomenon of religious conflict is produced by the phenomenon of class conflict.

Analytical Challenges

A significant difficulty with this distinction lies in its empirical support. The source material notes that such distinctions are rarely supported by concrete evidence. Furthermore, when analysing social action, the individuals involved are typically not aware of the underlying causes driving their behaviour, making it difficult to gather evidence directly from their accounts.
