Dominant Level Definition

Dominant level is a term used by Louis Althusser to describe a situation in which politics or ideology are permitted by the economic determinant level to be the most important aspect of society, enjoying real freedom to act independently of economic imperatives. The economy remains determinant “in the last instance,” but it is the dominant level — which need not be the economy itself — that shapes social life most directly at a given moment.
