The divine right of kings is a concept based on the belief that monarchs are placed on earth by God to rule, so that any challenge to their rule constitutes rebellion against God itself, deserving eternal damnation.
Ideological Function
The doctrine operates as an ideological device: it legitimates monarchical rule by grounding it in divine appointment, and it dissuades the ruled from revolting against the privileges of the monarch by turning political disobedience into sin.
