Displacement Definition

In psychoanalysis, displacement is a process in which strong emotions — whether negative or positive — that are directed toward a particular object or person are redirected onto another, because their expression toward the original target is for some reason blocked. Unable to be discharged where they arose, the feelings are transferred to a substitute. Displacement is understood as one of the defense mechanisms identified within psychoanalytic theory.
