Desocialization Definition
Desocialisation refers to the process by which an individual’s earlier socialisation and established self-identity are undone or dismantled. This process involves the removal of prior social structures and identities, often resulting in the acquisition of a new self within a new social context.

The concept is frequently invoked in studies concerning psychological manipulation, particularly in the context of thought reform and brainwashing techniques aimed at altering an individual’s established beliefs and behaviours.
Institutional Context
In sociology, desocialisation is also explored through institutional lenses. Erving Goffman utilised related concepts to describe how individuals within total institutions experience a form of ‘mortification’ when entering such environments; this involves being stripped of their previous self and subsequently acquiring a new identity dictated by the institution.
