Density Definition

Density refers to the degree of aggregation, concentration, or crowding within a specific geographical or social space. In urban sociology, it is frequently used to describe the concentration of a large number of individuals in a relatively small area, particularly characteristic of cities. This concept was central to the theory of urbanism, notably defined by Wirth, who observed that as population density increases, the potential for establishing meaningful interpersonal relationships tends to decrease.

Measurement and Types

Density can be measured in various ways depending on the context. Population density is typically calculated by dividing the number of residents by the area of the region. Alternatively, it can be measured using the number of persons working in an area, known as day-time population density. Beyond demographic measures, density can apply to social or occupational groupings; for example, trade-union membership density quantifies the percentage of workers at a particular workplace who are members of that union.
