The demographic transition refers to the shift in the balance between birth rates and death rates that occurs as a society moves from pre-industrial conditions to modern industrial societies. This process involves a sequence where mortality rates decline first, leading to an initial period of rapid population growth, followed subsequently by a decline in fertility rates, resulting in a new equilibrium characterised by low birth and death rates.

The theory posits that human populations change in size and structure during industrialisation through a series of phases. Pre-industrial societies were typically characterised by high birth rates balanced by high death rates, resulting in relatively stable populations. In the first phase of transition, improvements in nutrition, sanitation, and public health cause death rates to fall while birth rates remain high, leading to rapid population increase. The second phase involves social and cultural changes, such as shifts in attitudes and the introduction of contraception, which create pressure for smaller family sizes and reduced fertility.
