Deduction Definition

Deduction is the use of logical rules to derive, from a set of premises, conclusions that must necessarily follow. In research, deduction begins with theory, moves to hypotheses derived from that theory, and then tests those hypotheses through prediction and observation.

The Hypothetico-Deductive Method

This approach to theory and testing is commonly called the hypothetico-deductive method. Because it places hypotheses, prediction, and empirical testing at its centre, it is sometimes regarded as the method par excellence of science.
