Decentering is a concept employed primarily by postmodernist thought to describe a shift away from established, traditional methods of analysing social issues and discourses. It signifies a move toward approaches that are more fragmented, oblique, and less centred on singular, authoritative viewpoints when examining societal problems.

Context

This philosophical movement suggests that conventional ways of understanding reality and social phenomena—which rely on fixed, overarching structures or ‘centres’—are being dismantled. Consequently, the focus shifts from seeking unitary truths to exploring multiple, often contradictory, perspectives within social discourse.
