Culture Industry Definition
The concept of the Culture Industry was developed by thinkers within the Frankfurt School to analyse how the production of cultural material is inextricably linked to broader economic processes. It posits that the producers of culture are embedded within capitalist economic structures, meaning that understanding media and cultural phenomena requires sociologists to examine the underlying processes of profit, loss, resourcing, and other financial considerations associated with any capitalist enterprise.
Theoretical Context
This insight shifts sociological focus from merely observing communication processes within media organisations to scrutinising the economic foundations that underpin those processes. It argues that superficial analysis of communication is insufficient; a complete understanding necessitates examining the material and economic basis upon which cultural production occurs.
