Cultural Transmission Theory Definition
Cultural Transmission Theory is a foundational concept within the Chicago School of Sociology, positing that specific patterns of behaviour and deviance emerge in isolated urban areas due to unique immigration patterns. These geographically defined areas become separated from the mainstream society, allowing inhabitants to develop distinct knowledge, beliefs, and behavioural forms that facilitate particular types of deviant conduct. The theory emphasises that these cultural patterns are passed down through successive generations, even when new immigrant groups arrive, meaning stable patterns of deviance are observed within specific physical localities rather than being solely attributable to the populations residing there.
Origins in the Chicago School
The theory originated from observations made by sociologists studying urban environments, particularly focusing on how immigration and spatial segregation influenced social development within large cities. It provided an explanation for the persistence of certain deviant subcultures in specific neighbourhoods.
Mechanism of Transmission
