Cultural Pluralism Definition

Cultural pluralism is an approach to race relations that recognises the cultural diversity inherent in modern society by accepting the legitimacy of various ethnic minority cultures. A key implication of this perspective is the promotion of incorporating strong elements of these minority cultures into educational curricula. Furthermore, like its close relative, multiculturalism, cultural pluralism functions both descriptively and prescriptively; it describes a situation where multiple cultures coexist in a tolerant manner, exemplified by diverse metropolitan areas such as New York, and can also denote a deliberate policy aimed at fostering awareness and acceptance of alternative cultures.

Relationship to Multiculturalism

Cultural pluralism shares conceptual overlap with multiculturalism but focuses specifically on the recognition and acceptance of diverse cultural groups within a societal framework. While both terms address diversity, pluralism emphasises the legitimacy of existing minority cultures as part of the whole society.

Scope and Application

The term is employed in two primary ways: descriptively, to characterise a state of cultural plurality where different groups coexist peacefully; and prescriptively, to denote active policies designed to encourage the awareness and acceptance of alternative cultural forms.
