Cultural Difference Theory

Cultural Difference Theory

Cultural Difference Theory Definition

Cultural difference theory, within the sociology of education, posits that significant underachievement among working-class populations stems from a fundamental mismatch between the cultural background of the working class and the culture prevalent in the school environment. Unlike related theories, this perspective acknowledges that responsibility for educational failure is partially attributable to the institutional context of schooling itself.

Contrast with Deprivation Theories

This theory distinguishes itself from concepts such as cultural deprivation by shifting the focus from solely external deprivation to an internal structural conflict. While acknowledging socio-economic disadvantages, it places a greater emphasis on the interaction between disparate cultural spheres—the home environment and the educational setting—as the primary mechanism driving educational outcomes.
