Cultivation analysis is a sociological approach used in the study of media that places significant emphasis on how television shapes the perceptions and understanding of the world among its viewers. This perspective posits that the reality presented through mass media is not an objective reflection of the world, but rather a distorted and partial representation. The theory suggests that for many individuals, the reality depicted on television comes to represent what the actual world is like, meaning that the extent to which television portrays specific themes, such as sex or violence, directly influences how these individuals construct their perception of reality, resulting in a mediated worldview.

The central argument of cultivation theory is that prolonged exposure to media content cultivates a specific, often unreal, view of social and physical environments.
