Creativity Definition

Creativity is defined as an aspect of intelligence characterised by originality in thinking and problem-solving. Creative ability involves employing divergent thinking, which means generating a wide range of thoughts that diverge in various directions when seeking solutions.

Measurement and Testing

Assessment of creativity typically requires individuals to generate as many appropriate responses as possible to a given simple situation, often involving tasks such as word association or suggesting unusual uses for objects. Empirical studies have established positive correlations between general intelligence tests and creativity tests across the full spectrum of intelligence.

Relationship with Intelligence

Despite the correlation observed across the full range of cognitive ability, tests of creativity do not predict intelligence within narrower bands of high IQ scores. Furthermore, they do not reliably predict specific creative achievements in specialised domains such as the arts, literature, or scientific fields.
