Craft Industry

Craft Industry Definition

The craft industry refers to a mode of production characterised by the execution of work by skilled workers who manage the entire process of fashioning a product from inception to completion. This system often results in goods that are either unique or produced via small-scale batch methods. A key sociological aspect of this production form is that because the worker undertakes a wide variety of tasks requiring skill, it is frequently regarded as a less alienating experience compared to other modes of industrial production.

Characteristics

The defining feature of the craft industry lies in the involvement of highly skilled artisans who control the entire manufacturing sequence. This contrasts with mass production models where specialised labour is often segmented. Products generated through this system tend towards individuality, whether they are bespoke items or small-scale batches.

Relationship to Alienation

Sociologically, the craft industry is noted for offering a different relationship between the worker and the product than large-scale industrial settings. The involvement in numerous varied tasks allows the artisan greater control over the process, which contributes to a perception of less alienation in the working experience.
