Contestation Definition

Contestation is a sociological process, particularly as described by Mandel, wherein workers actively challenge the established rights of capital in order to determine the conditions under which production is organised. This dynamic arises from the structural constraints imposed by economic shifts, leading workers to contest the existing power relations and seek control over their working lives and living standards.

Theoretical Context

The concept is rooted in the argument that technological advancement, specifically the increase in automation, creates an impasse for capital regarding wage increases. Mandel contended that it would become impossible to continue raising the real wages of workers in this context, which consequently would cause the standard of living for the working class to decline.

Challenge to Power

As a result of these economic pressures and declining material conditions, workers initiate a challenge against the prerogatives of capitalism. This contestation represents an active struggle by labour to redefine the terms of production rather than passively accepting the existing economic structure imposed by capital.
