Conscription

Conscription Definition

Conscription is compulsory enrolment by the state, most particularly the requirement to undertake military service; in the United States it is known as the draft. More generally the word denotes being signed up for something against one’s will.

Modern Practice

Most modern states maintain relatively small professional armies while reserving the legal right to conscript sections of the general population as circumstances require.
