Concentration Definition
Concentration, within the sociology of media, describes the process by which the media industry becomes increasingly dominated by a small number of large corporations. This phenomenon involves the consolidation of ownership and control over media output, shifting power away from independent entities towards a few powerful businesses that dictate the flow and content of information.
Origins in the British Context
Initial sociological interest in concentration was primarily focused on Britain. This focus stemmed from observable historical changes, such as the collapse of independent local newspapers and the subsequent reduction in ownership within the national press, which resulted in fewer companies controlling overall media output.
Global Dimension
More recently, the concept has expanded beyond a national scope to encompass a global dimension. Contemporary analysis addresses the increasing domination of the worldwide media market by a limited number of very large international businesses.
