Closed Response Definition
Closed response refers to a method of data collection where respondents are presented with a limited set of predetermined answers or choices when responding to an interview question. These options may be presented verbally by reading them aloud, or visually displayed to the participants, often on cards or forms. The purpose of this technique is to guide the respondent towards selecting the reply that most closely aligns with their personal views or specific situation, thereby standardising and simplifying the collection of quantifiable data.
Application in Research
In sociological research, closed response methods are frequently employed in quantitative studies where researchers aim to gather measurable data on attitudes, preferences, or demographic information efficiently. This approach contrasts with open-ended responses, which allow for detailed, nuanced explanations but require more extensive analytical work.
