Biosociological Theories Definition

Biosociological theories are an interdisciplinary framework that integrates biological principles into sociological explanations of human social behaviour. They achieve this integration by drawing upon empirical discoveries and theoretical concepts from various biological disciplines, including evolutionary biology (such as sociobiology and behavioural ecology), ecology, ethology, neurobiology, endocrinology, and population genetics. Most biosociological theories are situated within the emerging field of evolutionary sociology, which seeks to understand social organisation through an evolutionary lens, distinguishing itself from pseudoscience like Social Darwinism by being grounded in established biological models and rigorous research methods.

Foundations and Evolution

The emergence of evolutionary sociology is rooted in twentieth-century evolutionary theory, particularly the integration of Darwinian evolution with Mendelian genetics. Key theoretical developments provided the necessary concepts for explaining social behaviour as a product of natural selection. This foundation was significantly shaped by seminal ideas such as W. D. Hamilton’s formulation of kin selection and inclusive fitness, which explain how cooperative social behaviours can promote the replication and transmission of genes. Further advancements included G. C. Williams’ clarification of adaptation and R. L. Trivers’ notion of reciprocal altruism, culminating in E. O. Wilson’s synthesis in Sociobiology: The New Synthesis. These developments established a unified theoretical basis for neo-Darwinian social theory, which posits that social structures arise from evolutionary processes.

Causal Frameworks

Biosociological theorists typically approach social behaviour by distinguishing between proximate and ultimate causes. Proximate causes refer to the immediate mechanisms—such as neural or hormonal activity or environmental stimuli—that trigger physiological responses. Ultimate causes, conversely, explain the evolved adaptations that generate these behaviours and provide the adaptive benefits for survival and reproductive success. For instance, mate choice involves both proximate factors (e.g., perception of bilateral symmetry) and ultimate factors (the adaptive value of this preference in ensuring offspring viability). While some theorists focus exclusively on one level, most theories are loosely categorised based on their primary emphasis: focusing on proximate physiological causes, ecological causes, or evolved adaptations as ultimate causes.

Theoretical Applications

The application of these integrated theories spans numerous areas of social science. Biosociologists have explored how evolutionary principles explain complex human dynamics, including gender relations (often through sexual selection), conflict resolution (such as homicide rates mediated by genetic relatedness via kin selection), and the evolution of group cohesion among non-kin individuals. Furthermore, they examine gene–culture coevolution, viewing genes, cognition, and culture as interacting systems. This perspective incorporates the concept of prepared learning, suggesting that innate mental mechanisms—evolved in the environment of evolutionary adaptedness (EEA)—predispose humans to specific behavioural patterns. Some theories also employ analogies from organic evolution, using concepts like mutation or diffusion to describe societal change, or propose ‘stage theories of evolution’ to classify societies based on their adaptations to environmental demands.
