Biopower is a concept introduced by Michel Foucault to describe the mechanisms through which modern states exercise control over the bodies of their populations. It refers to the multifaceted activities of the state that are oriented towards managing, regulating, and optimizing the life processes of its citizens.

Manifestations of Biopower

The exercise of biopower manifests in various practical ways, extending beyond direct political coercion into the realm of biological management. One key example is the state’s collection of statistical data concerning the incidence of disease, which represents an attempt by the state to control and manage the collective health of its members. Another manifestation involves the classification of human activities as either “normal” or “abnormal,” a process that serves to channel citizen behaviour into socially acceptable practices.
