It is characterised by two primary branches: biomedical demography, which focuses on human health and statistical modelling, and biological demography, which examines demographic patterns in relation to evolutionary and ecological principles across species. Main Branches of Biodemography

Biodemography is broadly divided into two main branches, each focusing on distinct relationships between demography and biology:

Biomedical Demography: This branch focuses on the application of demographic methods, statistical techniques, and modelling strategies to understand the health of different human populations. It collaborates closely with epidemiologists and emphasises the use of biomedical information, survey techniques, and physical measurements (such as height, weight, or genetic data) as covariates in demographic analyses.

Biological Demography: This branch investigates the demographic characteristics of various species by integrating biological paradigms, evolutionary perspectives, and comparative methods. It uses experimental systems and model organisms to explore universal principles of mortality and fertility, situating human population traits within the broader context of life history theory and ecological processes.

Theoretical Frameworks and Methodology

The structure of biodemography is often organised using a hierarchical ordering of knowledge found in biology, ranging from the molecular and cellular levels up to the ecological and evolutionary levels. This framework allows researchers to order studies across different biological scales. Biological demographers employ mathematical and statistical modelling alongside experimental methods, drawing upon population biology to address questions about mortality and development in model systems like rodents or fruit flies.

The Biological Paradigm of Aging

Biological demography offers a unique perspective on aging that complements traditional demography and gerontology. While traditional research often focuses on molecular or physiological mechanisms of ageing, the biological demographic paradigm integrates organismal-level research with evolutionary and ecological concepts. This approach addresses both proximate questions (mechanisms of ageing) and ultimate questions (the evolutionary and ecological function of a lifespan), emphasising how mortality patterns reflect broader life history characteristics across species.
