Diffusion is the process by which social practices and beliefs are transferred from one group to another, resulting in the spread of similar cultural traits across diverse societies and different levels of social organisation.
Theoretical Context and Origins
The concept of diffusion was first formally employed by the British anthropologist Edward Tylor in 1871 to account for the presence of non-indigenous cultural characteristics in various societies. Diffusion theory developed during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, often positioned in opposition to evolutionary theories concerning the origins of human culture. Proponents, such as Robert Lowie, viewed cultures as collections of borrowed traits where superior characteristics radiated outwards from a central point, suggesting that the most widespread features were the oldest. Early diffusionists sought to establish a single origin for all human culture, with some hypothesising that Egypt was the source of civilisation.
Social and Developmental Implications
In social anthropology and sociology, the existence of cultural diffusion raises significant theoretical issues, particularly challenging unilinear theories of change which posit that societies evolve through set, linear stages. Furthermore, it is problematic to assume that any single cultural trait or social institution is inherently compatible with others, as this implies a lack of internal coherence within individual societies.
Critiques and Modern Views
The diffusionist perspective has faced considerable criticism, especially concerning colonial history. Critics argued that the spread of culture and institutions from Europe to the Third World did not lead to development but rather resulted in underdevelopment. Modern anthropology has largely moved away from the notion that cultural traits are purely diffused, instead hypothesising that most cultural developments occurred independently within disparate areas.
Mathematical Analogies
In more mathematical applications, similarities observed in social diffusion patterns are sometimes compared to epidemiological models, such as the spread of contagious diseases. This analogy describes a pattern where transmission begins slowly with few participants, accelerates as more individuals become involved, and then slows down as fewer new people are introduced. However, these mathematical models are often treated as heuristic devices rather than precise models for social diffusion, reflecting the complex and variable nature of human social change, which is frequently hindered by individual resistance to change.
