Dependent Variable Definition
A dependent variable is a concept or element within a study, analysis, or model that is expected to change as a result of manipulation or variation in another factor, known as the independent variable. It represents the outcome that is being measured or observed to determine its relationship with other factors. For instance, if researchers investigate whether increased access to affordable childcare affects maternal employment rates, the change in employment rates would be considered the dependent variable, while the availability of childcare facilities would be the independent variable.
In empirical research and data analysis, the dependent variable is fundamentally the measure of the effect produced by the independent variable. In experimental settings, this involves controlling or manipulating the independent variable (such as the number of years in school) to observe the resulting change in the dependent variable (such as reading proficiency). Theoretically, within a specific framework, the dependent variable is the social element whose characteristics are sought to be explained by reference to the influence exerted by other, prior variables.
Role in Causal Modelling
The value of dependent variables is often predicted using causal modelling techniques. This process seeks to establish whether the observed changes in the outcome can be attributed to the manipulation of the input factors, although it is important to note that establishing direct causality requires careful consideration of all potential confounding variables present in the study.
