Cash-nexus Definition
The cash-nexus describes a specific mode of social and economic relationship between employers and workers where the sole bond connecting them is the monetary wage paid by the employer to the employee. In this dynamic, there are no other reciprocal obligations existing between the parties. Consequently, workers tend to adopt an instrumental attitude towards their labour, meaning that effort is expended primarily in pursuit of the reward received rather than being driven by other forms of social or personal commitment.
Core Tenets
The fundamental characteristic of the cash-nexus is the reduction of the employer-worker relationship to a purely transactional exchange of money for labour, thereby excluding non-monetary obligations.
Instrumental Attitude
This mode of interaction results in workers developing an instrumental attitude toward their employment. This perspective frames work as a means to an end—the acquisition of wages—where effort is directed towards maximising remuneration rather than engaging in relationships based on mutual obligation or intrinsic motivation.
