The sociology of science concerns the systematic study of physical and social phenomena, involving observation, experimentation, quantification, and the search for universal laws and explanations within both the physical and social realms. It addresses the extent to which a strict definition of ‘science’ is necessary and possible, particularly examining how definitions appropriate for the physical sciences translate to the social sciences, given their dependence on human choice and the fluidity of social action.
Foundational Debates and Demarcation
The general problems in defining and identifying science have intensified due to critical challenges to conventional philosophies of knowledge. A key issue is demarcating science from non-science (such as ideology), a task complicated by the fact that scientific knowledge involves social production, meaning it operates within cultural contexts shaped by the interests of scientists and society at large. While previous attempts to establish a criterion for demarcation, such as positivism or falsificationism, have gained support, contemporary thought often accepts the inherent relativity of scientific knowledge. Philosophers like Habermas and Feyerabend have proposed models emphasising ‘open discourse’ and ‘warranted consensus’ as conditions for knowledge acquisition.
Historical Traditions
The field is characterised by a tension between two major traditions: an American approach and a European (largely British) tradition. The earlier American writers focused on how societies could be arranged to facilitate the emergence of truth, often viewing science through the lens of social order. Conversely, the more recent British contributions investigate how certain conclusions about the physical world are accepted in specific societies at particular times, linking this to the ‘phenomenological revolution’ in the social sciences. Although these traditions appear oppositional, scholars suggest their relationship is one of ‘cognitive tangentiality with an admixture of academic antagonism’, serving as a heuristic device for each other.
Methodological and Theoretical Contributions
Sociologists studying science often focus on the mechanisms by which scientific knowledge is produced. This involves examining not only the technical details but also the social environment, often through detailed interviews with scientific communities or employing anthropological methods like participant observation. Early work, notably by Robert K. Merton, investigated the norms governing scientific careers and their relationship to objective knowledge. Later developments, such as Thomas Kuhn’s work on scientific revolutions, opened the door for a sociology of scientific knowledge (SSK), which focuses on the social construction of scientific ideas, diverging from the earlier focus on how social factors merely create conditions for scientific development.
Contemporary Significance
The field has seen considerable growth in recent decades, often termed ‘science and technology studies’ or ‘science studies’. This focus allows sociologists to examine the influence of social factors on scientific outcomes, as demonstrated by contemporary concerns such as climate change. While acknowledging that sociological factors shape expert views and the plausibility of scientific claims, it is important to note that this does not imply that science is purely a social construct. The sociology of science remains vital for understanding how scientific objectivity is pursued, how social change is driven by research, and the complex interplay between scientific communities and broader society.
