A social network refers to the patterns of connections that exist between individuals, which are established through various bonds such as kinship, friendship, or more specialised ties. The study of these interconnected patterns was a fundamental component of sociometry.

The systematic tracing and analysis of social networks were significantly advanced in the mid-twentieth century. In the 1960s, the analysis of social networks was heavily influenced by the mathematical sociology developed by Harrison White, leading to the establishment of specialised academic study, reflected in the journal Social Networks.

Types of Network Analysis

Network analysis is typically categorised into several distinct approaches: egocentric network analysis focuses on the perspective of a single individual regarding their connections; systemic networks examine the structure of the network as a whole, encompassing all participants; and diffusion studies concentrate specifically on the flow mechanisms of new ideas, illnesses, or information moving through these connections.

Contemporary Significance

Since the advent of the Internet, the term ‘network’ has frequently served as a dominant metaphor for conceptualising novel forms of social organisation. These modern structures are often anticipated to replace traditional institutions, such as the nation-state, which are typically rooted in specific geographical locations.
