History of Austrian Association for Sociology (OGS)/ Österreichische Gesellschaft für Soziologie

Austria is a Central European nation bordered by Germany, encompassing a population of 9 million. Sociology has been a dominant subject in education and policy-making in Austria since the previous century. Österreichische Gesellschaft für Soziologie (OGS) /Austrian Association for Sociology founded in 1950, is an interest group for sociologists in Austria. In 1950 August Maria Knoll from Vienna became the first president of OGS.

The legal status of OGS 

The OGS is a nonprofit organization. The Austrian legislation on organizations and the laws established by the general assembly serves as the legal foundation for their functioning.

Mission and Objectives of OGS

The OGS encourages members to engage in scientific and professional-political discussions and provides a forum for reflection on the practical demands of sociological work.

As a result, the OGS contributes to the advancement of sociology as a scientific subject and profession and sociology’s public exposure.

International outreach of the Austrian Association for Sociology

The OGS is a member of the Association of Scientific Societies in Austria (VWGÖ), the International Sociological Association (ISA) and the European Sociological Association (ESA), and numerous other scientific associations.

Austrian Journal of Sociology

Österreichische Zeitschrift für Soziologie (ÖZS) ( Translation – Austrian Journal of Sociology) is the German language journal of Österreichische Gesellschaft für Soziologie/ Austrian Association for Sociology published on quarterly basis since 1976.

Membership 

Membership is open to

  • Graduates with a suitable degree and professionals in the social sciences
  • Bachelor, master, diploma, and doctorate students in sociology (reduced charge)
  • Interested parties who do not satisfy these qualifications may become supporting members.

Yearly Conference

Österreichischen Kongress für Soziologie/ Austrian Congress for Sociology is the yearly conference held by Österreichische Gesellschaft für Soziologie since 1950.

In 2011, the Austrian Association for Sociology collaborated with the German Sociological Association and the Swiss Sociological Association to host a joint conference in Austria. 

Due to the corona epidemic, a new edition of a worldwide sociology congress was held in digital format in 2021.
