Denotation Definition
Denotation refers to the literal, explicit, or actual meaning of a signifier, which is what is directly seen or described. In semiotics, it denotes the specific, objective meaning attached to a word, image, message, or sign, focusing purely on its literal representation rather than implied associations. For instance, the denotation of the signifier “torch” is simply the description of “a piece of wood with flames at one end.”
Denotation and Connotation
Denotation is fundamentally contrasted with connotation, which encompasses the broader range of subjective associations that a sign may evoke. While denotation provides the narrow, literal meaning—such as defining ‘pig’ as a farm animal—connotation involves the wider spectrum of cultural or contextual meanings attached to that sign. These connotations allow a term to carry secondary implications; for example, while the denotative meaning of ‘pig’ is an animal, its connotations can include associations with uncleanliness or uncouth behaviour. The specific range of connotations a sign possesses is entirely dependent upon the context in which it is deployed, as demonstrated by how the meaning of ‘pig’ differs between a farming magazine and Muslim religious discourse.
