Demography is the statistical study of human populations, focusing on their size, structure, and distribution, and analysing how these characteristics change over time due to processes such as fertility, mortality, and migration. It seeks to answer why populations increase or decrease, and how changes in age composition, sex ratios, and spatial distribution are driven by these demographic processes.

Scope and Focus

The field encompasses the analysis of human populations, though it can also be applied to animal populations. Central to demography is understanding the size and structure of groups, including their composition by sex, age, marital status, and ethnic origin. Demographers investigate the dynamics of population change, which involves tracking birth rates, death rates, and migration patterns. Furthermore, demographic analysis extends to examining the geographical distribution of populations, the availability of resources, and the demographic features relevant to labour supply.

Formal vs. Social Demography

Demography is often divided into two main paradigms: formal demography and social (or historical) demography. Formal demography focuses on the mathematical structure and functions of human populations, employing statistical analysis and mathematical models for forecasting. In contrast, social demography or population studies investigates the historical conditions and the causes and consequences of population change, drawing upon sociological concepts to understand the factors mediating between population and its environment.

Methodology and Models

The methodology relies on analysing official statistics derived from vital records (births, deaths, marriages) and population censuses. Historically, this began with the work of John Graunt in 1662, who studied mortality data. Modern demographers use sophisticated mathematical models to project future population sizes and age structures. The fundamental dynamic of population change is often represented by the population equation: $P_2 = P_1 + B – D + M$, where $P$ represents population size, $B$ is births, $D$ is deaths, and $M$ is net migration.

Intersections with Sociology

Although demography and sociology have historically developed separately, there is a fundamental relationship between the two disciplines. Historical demography, particularly through methods like family reconstitution using parish records, has significantly influenced sociological understanding of family structure and social change by revealing the impact of social conditions on fertility and mortality. The study of population change provides an essential underpinning for sociological analysis of social structure, economic policy, and social development.

Key Concepts

Age is a crucial variable in demography, reflecting the passage of time and allowing for the measurement of life-course experiences. Demographers use concepts such as the life-cycle to chart individual experiences (e.g., education, retirement) and cohorts, which are aggregates of individuals sharing similar life events, often defined by birth year or entry into a specific stage of life.
