The biomechanical model of health is a perspective that views health and illness primarily through a mechanistic lens, often characteristic of Western industrial societies. In this framework, the doctor is conceptualised as a mechanic tasked with repairing or treating a defective biological machine, which consequently tends to disregard the interconnectedness between the mind and body, and physical and mental well-being.
Core Characteristics
This model operates based on several key assumptions regarding the nature of disease and treatment:
* Symptom Focus: It prioritises the treatment of observable symptoms rather than investigating the underlying root causes of illness.
* Specific Etiology: There is a tendency to attribute particular diseases to specific agents, such as germs (known as the doctrine of specific etiology).
* Individualisation: The focus is placed on the individual body as the locus of disease and the primary object for treatment, often neglecting the wider social, psychological, and environmental context in which the patient exists.

Criticisms
Critics argue that the biomechanical model of health is inherently dehumanising because its focus on the physical effects of disease and symptom management diverts attention away from crucial social and environmental determinants of poor health. This perspective overlooks the complex interplay between an individual’s experience, their social context, and their psychological state when determining health outcomes.
