Age at Marriage Definition

Age at marriage, which is impacted by a community’s cultural, social, and economic characteristics, is the median or average age of men and women at the time of their first marriage.

Western and Indian society

Men are typically two years older than women when they get married for the first time in many Western nations. However, since World War II, the median age of marriage has increased dramatically. The tendency among young people to live together before getting married and the probability that many women may want to start a profession before getting married are both contributing factors to this increase.

In Indian society, child marriage is prevalent, and even after severe legal restrictions, it continues. Women are considered a burden in traditional communities; instead of providing them with adequate education, they are married off by their parents. The marriage age is generally above 20 among the educated elite class in various countries. Job security and family economic status influence age at marriage.
