The Matthew effect describes the phenomenon where differential recognition for scientific contributions, and consequently the distribution of rewards within the scientific system, is shaped by an existing stratification structure. In essence, it refers to the process through which cumulative advantage leads to the concentration of status and rewards among a few scientists, laboratories, and institutions, resulting in increasing disparities in reputation and reward that go beyond differences attributable solely to the quality of scientific performance.

Mechanism and Social Context

Within the social system of science, this effect arises because status within the opportunity structure is dependent on positive recognition from peers. Extrinsic rewards, such as income or career advancement, derive primarily from this basic form of recognition rather than purely meritocratic assessment. The mechanism operates by accruing large increments of peer recognition to highly reputed scientists at the expense of those with comparable performance but less renown. This process involves a misallocation of credit, where the accumulation of advantage reinforces existing inequalities in the distribution of rewards across the scientific community.

Consequences for Individuals and the System

The Matthew effect introduces particularism into the social system of science by basing recognition on personal attributes rather than solely on role performance. For individual practitioners, this mechanism can be deeply inequitable, penalising those who experience delayed or insufficient recognition in their early careers. Conversely, for the scientific system as a whole, the misallocation of credit is functional; it enhances the visibility and diffusion of new knowledge. Eminent scientists’ discoveries are more likely to be quickly incorporated into the body of scientific knowledge, accelerating development by focusing attention and increasing the intensity with which established works are used within communication networks.

Empirical Findings and Theoretical Development

Empirical investigations, particularly those using citations as a measure of scientific quality, suggest that the Matthew effect influences the diffusion of a scientist’s complete work more significantly than any single paper. While high-quality papers generally receive recognition, lesser papers authored by highly ranked scientists are often diffused earlier than similar works by lower-ranking authors. Furthermore, the effect serves to focus attention on less known scientists who achieve greater fame through collaboration with established figures.

The theoretical understanding of the Matthew effect has evolved significantly since its initial formulation. It was initially elaborated by examining documented historical cases involving multiple discoveries and co-authorship, notably by Merton, who observed that the more eminent scientist received greater credit for joint efforts. Subsequent research has broadened this view: Goldstone (1979) generalised it from specific instances to a generalized principle operating in society at large, while further studies have applied it to gender differences (Rossiter, 1993) and the formal communication structures of science (Bonitz & Scharnhorst, 2001).
