Bureaucratization Definition
Bureaucratization refers to the societal process by which societies increasingly become governed and controlled by bureaucratic organisations. This transformation inherently involves a reduction in individual freedom and a decline in individualism as systems prioritise administrative control and adherence to established rules over personal autonomy.
Theoretical Foundations
The concept is most closely associated with the work of Max Weber, who posited that modern societies are characterised by rationality. Weber argued that this rationalisation led directly to the dominance of bureaucracy, where administrative procedures become the defining structure of social life.
The Iron Cage
Weber famously described the outcome of this process as an “iron cage” of bureaucracy. This metaphor illustrates how the highly rational and organised structures of modern administration, while offering efficiency, simultaneously restrict individual liberty and control the lives of individuals within them.
