Thanatos Definition

Thanatos refers to the death instinct, a fundamental concept within Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory of personality. It represents the innate drive towards destruction and a return to an inorganic state, encompassing all instincts that are inherently destructive, such as aggression. This instinct stands in direct opposition to Eros, which is conceptualised as the life instinct, thereby establishing a dynamic polarity between the drives for life and death within the human psyche.
