Cognitive Consistency Definition
Cognitive consistency refers to the psychological experience of maintaining thoughts, attitudes, or behaviours that are not mutually contradictory. This concept involves the interplay between consistency and inconsistency, consonance and dissonance, and balance and imbalance, which serves as a foundational framework for understanding mental coherence.
Application in Social Psychology
The polarity between cognitive consistency and inconsistency has been extensively used by social psychologists when analysing processes of attitude change. Theorists often posit that individuals possess an inherent desire for cognitive consistency. This desire stems from the discomfort associated with cognitive inconsistencies—which are defined as a mismatch between various cognitions—and this discomfort is theorised to motivate subsequent shifts in attitude.
Implications
While the pursuit of consistency drives psychological processes, the resulting state can also lead to negative outcomes. Specifically, managing cognitive inconsistency may result in denial or rationalisation, where individuals adjust their beliefs to avoid internal conflict rather than genuinely reassessing their positions. This concept is closely related to the phenomenon of cognitive dissonance.
